Intel 8th Gen Coffee Lake’s CPU Releases Will Need A New Motherboard Based On Intel’s 300 Series Chipset

Yesterday, Intel unveiled its first 8th generation processors that were called Kaby Lake refresh. Further down the line, 8th generation will also feature Coffee Lake and Cannonlake CPUs, which will be based on 14++ and 10nm architectures.

Now, thanks to some leaked details of the upcoming Coffee Lake processors, it has been revealed that Coffee Lake’s desktop releases will need a new motherboard based on Intel’s 300 series chipset; the current 200 series motherboards won’t work. This was first spotted by Legit Reviews.
To some people, this won’t make sense as the Coffee Lake pin count is same as Kaby Lake.
Here’s some other information that was spotted on the side of the Coffee Lake boxes spotted on Intel’s website:
  • 6 Cores
  • Intel Hyper-Threading Technology For 12 Way Multitasking
  • Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0
  • Intel Smart Cache Technology
  • Supports Intel Optane Memory
  • Supports Tw0-Channel DDR4
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • Requires Intel 300 Series chipset-based motherboard
The new motherboard requirement has been confirmed by other sources like ASRock and Hot Hardware.
This upcoming move by Intel is being speculated with different lenses, and people are fearing that it has got the potential to backfire on the consumer end. Compared to Intel, on the other hand, AMD has committed to support AM4 for all CPUs until 2020.
