The FTC has begun an initiative to crack down on tech support pop-up scams. According to the agency, its "Operation Tech Trap" involves a "nationwide and international crackdown" on scams. These scams often involve security alert-like pop-ups that convince people to spend money fixing problems that don't exist.
Most people have encountered these pop-ups at one time or another and understand they're not supposed to be clicked. Yet, some people don't realize they're being scammed. The FTC says these activities trick thousands of people and cost them "millions of dollars" collectively.
Typically users are put in contact with call centers that pressure them into handing over money and remote access to fix an allegedly serious problem.
The FTC has already announced four legal proceedings and the resolution of two other suits.
