Europe Likely To Treat Uber The Same As Taxi Companies

It's looking like Uber is going to be faced with the same regulations across Europe as its taxi competitors. An adviser with Europe's top court has issued a nonbinding opinion stating "the service offered by Uber cannot be classified as an 'information society service."

If the EU's Court of Justice agrees with that opinion from advocate general Maciej Szpunar, Uber will have to deal with taxi-like regulations. That could hinder its ability to grow in multiple countries. Typically the court agrees with the opinion offered by the advocate general.

Szpunar looked at the situation after Spanish taxi providers complained about Uber's classification. A judge in Barcelona referred the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
