Disney Denies It Was Hacked, No Movie Was Stolen

Disney wasn't hacked after all. Despite multiple reports from the media and even some support from Disney itself, it turns out the company wasn't breached and none of its upcoming movies were stolen.

Multiple sources claimed hackers had taken Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and were threatening to release it in 5-minute parts. They were demanding a Bitcoin ransom to keep the movie from being released.
To our knowledge we were not hacked. We had a threat of a hack of a movie being stolen. We decided to take it seriously, but not react in the manner in which the person who was threatening us had required.- Bob Iger, CEO, Disney
Iger previously told ABC employees during a town hall that someone claimed to have hacked Disney and was trying to extort the company. At the time, he didn't confirm if the hack was real or what the movie was.
After investigating the situation, it looks like the hack was actually a hoax intended to steal money from Disney if at all possible.
The hackers also reportedly tried to get money from pirated content release groups. They tried to sell the allegedly stolen movie to them, but no one bought it.
