Facebook needs to remove content considered to be hate speech under Austrian law, an appeals court in the country has decided. In December 2016, another court found Facebook would need to take down hate speech.
The social network appealed that decision, but it lost. Under the current ruling, it'll have to remove content that's reported and also remove any replications of the posts.
It's also been told to get rid of posts globally, not just within the country. If Facebook complies, this ruling will have a fairly widespread effect.
The case stems from a complaint from the Austrian Green party, whose leader, Eva Glawischnig, was insulted on the platform. The party is going to continue pushing for even stricter rulings that'll require Facebook pay damages for hate speech and identify account holders.
