he news of Canonical abandoning Unity 8 and Ubuntu Touch came as a shock for both Ubuntu users and the Linux community overall. However, there is a team of developers who goes by the name UBports has expressed their desire to continue the development of the scrapped projects.
The UBports community primarily focuses on porting the Ubuntu Touch – a mobile operating system developed by Canonical – to various smartphones and tablets.
The team has managed to put Ubuntu Touch devices on Nexus 5, Fairphone 2, OnePlus One. They were working on other devices including OnePlus 3, Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, etc. but the news about Ubuntu Touch spilled water on their plans.
First spotted by Softpedia, the founder of the UBports group Marius Gripsgård posted on his Google+ profile that he would make efforts to continue the development of Unity 8 and Ubuntu Touch.
“I’m not giving up! I will do my best to keep Ubuntu touch and Unity8 standing on both it’s legs! It will be hard. The Ubuntu touch wheel is still spinning, and it has enough momentum to spin until we start spinning it with hopefully with greater force. Expect some news and idea drafts from the UBports team in the coming weeks.,” Gripsgård wrote in the post.
