GNOME 3.24 Linux Desktop Environment Released | Here Are The New Features

The GNOME Project has released the latest stable version of their open source desktop environment. GNOME 3.24, codenamed Portland, is here after 6 months of development and 28459 changes. Some of the biggest features of GNOME 3.24 are Night Light, improved notifications, new Recipes and Games application, two GPU support, etc.

In any desktop-focused Linux distribution, a desktop environment plays a major role. Night Light

Night Light is one of the highlight features of the GNOME 3.24 release. Now you don’t need to use third party apps to change the screen color according to the time of the day. It reduces the blue light and sleeplessness.

This feature can be enabled by accessing the Display option in System Settings.

New Recipes application

The new Recipes application contains recipes contributed by the GNOME community members. It has lots of features for adding/editing recipes, creating shopping lists, taking care of quantities, etc. Another new app is Games, which is a games library.

Improved Applications

Other GNOME applications like Web, Photos, Games, Polari, Calendar, and Calculator haven been improved.

Refined Notifications

Now, weather information has been incorporated into the notifications area. The users can use it to a simple summary of day’s weather. Relative timestamps have been added to make missed alerts more understandable.

Support for two graphics cards

GNOME 3.24 also brings support for systems with two graphics cards. You can choose a particular GPU while launching an application.

Builder and Flatpak Improvements

As Builder and Flatpak get mature, GNOME is getting a more exciting release for developers. With Builder, they can use Flatpack as an easy and stable base for application development.

Improved Icons

GNOME 3.24 brings lots of high-resolution icons to make sure that everything looks good to eyes. The icons have also been doubled from 256×256px to 512×512p. They are now more detailed and intricate.
