The phrase freedom and choice goes hand-in-hand when we talk about Linux. This open source operating system has a lot to offer to everybody. There are many distros to choose from. One such unique distro is Linux From Scratch, commonly known as LFS. It’s not so much of a distro as it’s a compilation of tutorials, guides, books, and instructions.
Moreover, Linux From Scratch is an educational adventure that follows the philosophy of building your system entirely on your own. Having said that, let me tell you about its latest release, LFS 8.0.
The Linux From Scratch community announced the release of LFS Version 8.0. Along with this release, the developers have also released LFS Version 8.0 (systemd), BLFS Version 8.0, and BLFS Version 8.0 (systemd).
Major features of Linux From Scratch 8.0:
  • Updates to glibc-2.24
  • Updates to binutils-2.26
  • Updates to gcc-6.2.0
  • Major packages updated, in total 29
  • Fixes to bootscripts
  • Changes to text throughout the book
The BLFS (Beyond Linux From Scratch) version has about 800 more packages as compared to the base LFS 7.10 book. It also features 775 updates and changes.
The other big change in Linux From Scratch 8.0 comes in the form of new Gold linker support (/usr/bin/ld.gold), but it’s not the default linker. 8.0 also removes the symbolic link from /lib to /lib64, along with the complete removal of /usr/lib64.
If you’re interested in grabbing LFS 8.0 and creating your own Linux distro, feel free to visit their website.
