Microsoft Developing “Cloud Shell” — A Lightweight Windows For Modern Computing

windows cloud shell operating system
According to media reports, Microsoft is developing a “lightweight Windows version for modern computing world.” It might be a Windows 10 version for the cloud that one could stream on any internet-connected device. Other speculations suggest that it might be
Microsoft’s way to fulfill its Windows RT dreams. It should be noted that at the moment, nothing is confirmed.
Last week, the rumor mill went into overdrive when many media reports suggested that Microsoft is working on a unified and adaptive shell for Windows 10. It was reported that the company is internally calling the platform the “Composable Shell” or CSHELL.
Now, according to a new report, Microsoft is working on something beyond CSHELL by creating a new Windows shell that’s being referred to as Cloud Shell. According to its description, Cloud Shell is a new “lightweight iteration of Windows designed for the modern computing world.”
Petri reports that the timeline of the launch of this version is 2017, but there’s no solid release/announcement.
As the details regarding Cloud Shell are limited at the moment, it could be just a shell for Windows operating system.
The speculations are also being made that with Cloud Shell, Microsoft might be exploring the possibilities to rejuvenate Windows RT, which flopped due to lack of apps for ARM machines. Notably back in December, Fossbytes told you about Microsoft’s plans to bring full Windows experience to mobile devices with ARM CPUs.
The report also fiddles with the likelihood of a lightweight version of Windows–a Windows 10 version that could be streamed from Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform to the physical devices.
While we might not be having all the answers at the moment, but the questions raised by the reports are surely exciting.
Don’t forget to tell us your views and feedback related to this Windows Cloud Shell story.
