‘Immunize your dogs against rabies annually’

ASABA—DELTA State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Austin Chikezie, has called on dog owners in Nigeria, particularly in the

state to cultivate the habit of immunizing their dogs annually against rabies.

Speaking at the World Rabies Day, coordinated by Global Alliance for Rabies Control with the endorsement of World Health Organisation, WHO, World Organisation for Animal Health, OIE, and other related global health organisation and United Nations, he stressed the need for dogs to be immunized regularly from the age of six weeks in any government and private veterinary clinics around them and obtain a certificate of vaccination.

Chikezie, said “Restriction of dogs within the compound or in chains prevent contact with stray dogs while good feeding and proper care discourages wandering of dogs and therefore, reduces the chances of getting infected.

“Exposure to rabies through dog and cat bite is alarming, resulting in unquantifiable number of deaths both in animals and man.

“There are two forms of rabies, the dumb rabies or paralytic rabies that causes paralysis of the nervous system in both animals and men and the furious rabies that come with the tendency to attack aggressively anything on the dog’s path, including lifeless objects like wood, stone as if possessed by an evil spirit.”
