3 diggers die, as well caves in

ONITSHA—Three persons, yesterday, lost their lives at the Trans-Nkisi Federal Housing Estate in the 33 Area of Onitsha, Anambra State, after a well they were digging caved in and buried them alive.
Two of the victims, who were yet to be identified at press time, were said to be citizens of Akwa Ibom State, resident at the estate and were hired by a another resident to dig a water well.

According to the source, as they got close to about 15 feet depth, the well suddenly caved in and covered them up.
It was gathered that a man from the northern part of the country, who claimed to have the capacity to rescue them alive, demanded N100,000 for the job and was said to have been given N50,000 as an advance payment.
However, when he dived into the well for the rescue mission, he came out later without success. The restless residents hired others, who succeeded in bringing out the lifeless bodies.
The Divisional Police Officer in-charge of ‘33’ Police Station, Mr. Apev, a Superintendent of Police, who simply confirmed that the corpses of the three victims were recovered from the well, said he had briefed higher authorities for appropriate action.
Also, the Police Area Commander for Onitsha, Yahaya Abubakar, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, confirmed the incident, but could not give much details, adding that investigation was still in progress.
