Nigerians need to support the Muhammadu Buhari administration to succeed, in their self-interests, Engr. Amhed Zakari, has said.
Engr. Zakari, a peace campaigner, told Vanguard in an interview that if the Buhari administration failed, Nigerians would be worse off, as the failure of
the government would have negative impacts on their lives.
His words, “Let’s support the government of Muhammadu Buhari so that he will be in a position to deliver to Nigerians on the promises that he made during the 2014 presidential elections campaigns. This is important.”
He said that Buhari is not an All Progressives Congress (APC) president but the president of Nigeria and therefore good spirited Nigerians must rally round him to succeed for the good of all.
“So it is not just an issue of President Muhammadu Buhari. No. Every president that comes to power, Nigerians must take it as a duty to support that president. We must move away from business as usual.
“Let’s begin to behave like Americans who love their country so much. Nigerians should love their country and understand that whoever God has chosen to lead us, whether that person is a Christian, Muslim or somebody who doesn’t believe in any of these two religions- because we have them.
“We have free thinkers who are highly educated who can contest election in this country, and if God has destined them to rule this country, they will become president. If that happens it becomes mandatory for every Nigerian to support that administration for the good of all.
“Not for the good of the president because if the president fails, the pains and negativity of his failure will impact on Nigerians. But if he succeeds, it will for the good of all Nigerians. This is what our organization believes in it the reality.
“Let’s support the government of Muhammadu Buhari so that he will be in a position to deliver to Nigerians on the promises that he made during the 2014 presidential elections campaigns. This is important.”
“If Nigerians were to behave like Americans, at least we borrowed democracy from America, but one thing we didn’t borrow from America is the attitude of Americans towards the government. In America, they all agreed that yes they belong to different political parties but the moment a president wins an election and he is sworn in as the president of the United States of America, every American falls in line behind that government and then support that government so that it can deliver.
“But in our own case in Nigeria just the democracy we borrowed, we do not support the government if we do not belong to the same party with the president. If he does anything no matter how good you will see some Nigerians who keep criticizing, making very negative criticism and then causing confusion. Some unpatriotic Nigerians can even go far as sponsoring violence.
“We need to start supporting our government, it doesn’t matter from which political party which the individual come from, or whoever is there if the president is a Christian, Muslim or even if he doesn’t belong to any of these religions, provided he followed due process and Nigerians queued up to elect him as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria then it becomes mandatory for every Nigerian to support that government and that administration so that the government can be in a position to deliver for the good of all Nigerians. Then when election comes, everybody goes back to his party and then I think it will be better for us.
Engr. Zakari said that if all Nigerians had considered former President Goodluck Jonathan and their president and assisted him to succeed, the nation could have been better off.
“If all Nigerians rallied round Jonathan perhaps. The peace campaigner said that perharps, if all Nigerians genuinely supported former President Goodluck Jonathan, the nation would not be where it is today.
“Maybe, just maybe, if Nigerians had rallied around Goodluck Jonathan for the five years he was in Office, probably we would not have found ourselves where we are today.”
