Court dissolves 17-yr-old marriage

Mr Henric Agbaje, the President of a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan on Wednesday dissolved the 17-year-old marriage between one Opeyemi Benson and her husband, Oluwatobi.
Agbaje said that the court put an end to the relationship as a result of
irreconcilable differences.
He awarded custody of the two children produced by the union to Opeyemi and directed Oluwatobi to pay N6,000 as monthly feeding allowance for the upkeep of the two children.
The judge also stated that Oluwatobi would be responsible for the education and other welfare needs of the children.
Earlier in her petition to the court, Opeyemi said that her husband failed in his responsibility to fend for her and the children, thus exposing them to starvation and impoverishment.
“I am fed up with the wretched life of 17 years in which two innocent children are suffering.
“Rather than cater for our needs, Oluwatobi turns me into a punching bag at any slight provocation as if I am responsible for his woes.
“My lord, I no longer have passion for him and we have infact stopped living together as couple for about three years now,” Opeyemi said.
Oluwatobi, a mason, gave consent to the dissolution, alleging that his wife was wayward.
“My lord, I accept the divorce because Opeyemi had for many years been a wayward wife who does not deserve to be in any marriage.
“I had always suspected that Opeyemi was cheating on me because she was usually returning home late in the night.
“One day, I caught her red -handed with her concubine and we fought bitterly that night.
“Opeyemi then decided to pack out from the house when she knew that her secret had been revealed.
“I did a lot to still persuade her to remain by pleading with her inspite of knowing that she was guilty.
“She then started hurling curses at  me for being a problem to her,’’ the estranged husband said.
Opeyemi, an hair stylist, resides at Yejide area while Oluwatobi is a resident of Oriaje-Odo Oba areas of Ibadan.
