Catholic Bishop to Buhari: Reverse Nigeria’s dwindling economic fortunes

ABUJA – The Auxilliary  Bishop of Abuja, Most Reverend Anslem Umoren has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to heed the calls made by the Catholic Bishops Conference and other well-meaning individuals on the current hardship faced by Nigerians, urging him to urgently take steps to reverse the dwindling fortunes of the economy.

In a statement in Abuja, Umoren who was speaking at the 2016 Cultural Day Celebration organized by the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Gwarimpa, Abuja, advised the President not to jettison the suggestions of individuals who are bold enough to tell him the truth concerning ways out of the economic recession plaguing the country.
He, however, stated that the recession affects every Nigerian, while he called on all Nigerians to contribute in their own little ways to ensure that the country comes out of the present economic quagmire in the shortest possible time.
He said: “I have no doubt that he will accept the call made by Catholic Bishops at the recently held Bishops Conference.
“He should be interested in the people who tell him the truth. If he has the interest of the country at heart,   he should be able to accept whatever good suggestions people are making which will help him to move the country forward.
“I am sure the President accepted that he has a  duty to the nation, that was the reason he was elected. So, it is not how he takes the message because I know he will take it well.”
“Every Nigerian should remember that we are all together in it and if we are to come out of it, the determination, contributions and effort of everyone is important; from the leaders to the led.”
Furthermore, he charged Christians to while seeking divine intervention on the problem, to also be their brothers’ keepers, stressing that such was their obligations as stipulated in the scripture.
He said, “There are some things we cannot do. We are into recession for a lot of reasons, only the economists can explain that, all we can do in the circumstance is to seek the face of God.
“But we as Christians also have an obligation to live well, not just to live well but to make sure that our brothers and sisters live well.
“That is the obligation of every Christian and if we all do that, there will be no fighting and no quarreling. In fact, we will be happy and peaceful   just as the scripture has said.”
