- Premium Times is reporting that police in Ebonyi state have thwarted a jailbreak attempt at the Abakiliki Prisons during an inmate riot.
According to reports, the event occurred on Thursday morning during riot by inmates which for hours.
Premium Times quoted security sources as saying that at least two people, who are believed to be prison officials were killed by inmates in the fracas.
It quoted eyewitness as saying that police has blocked off all roads leading to the correctional facility even as it fired shots at the inmates in a battle to recover a firearm allegedly seized from one of the prison officials.
Ebonyi Police Command spokesperson, George Okafor said the law enforcement was working hard to resolve the crisis.
“There was an attempted jailbreak and the prisons called in the police. We cordoned off the area and restored nomalcy to the area. We will brief you later on the issue once everything have been sorted out,” he told Premium Times.
While the reason for the riot could not be ascertained, a security source was quoted as saying that inmates made attempts at escaping after the riot started and had already broken through a wall when anti-riot policemen arrived and subdued them using teargas.
