Nigeria, through some of its revenue-generating agencies, is doing everything possible to shore up its financial base
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been going round the country sealing companies for evading or
refusing to pay tax
The agency stormed Benue state where it sealed up a hotel owned by a senator, who once served as governor of the state
For refusing to pay taxes, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has shut down the Haf Haven hotel located at 24 Atiku Abubakar Way, Makurdi, Benue state.
This comprised of company income tax, education tax, withholding tax and value added tax.
A top staff of the hotel, Mrs Margaret Hinger, had called Akume’s wife to speak with Edeh, but her pleas did not work as the FIRS team insisted on full payment of the tax.
The later ordered the hotel to discharge its guests just before it was shut down to business activities.
The FIRS also shut Treaties Bukka at Old Oturkpo Road, Makurdi for owing N52 million in withholding tax and VAT from 2013 to 2015.
Tax evasion or refusal to pay tax are considered criminal offences in Nigeria.
Akume is a former governor of Benue state. He left to become a senator and reportedly contested for the Senate presidency in 2015.
He however stepped down in the heat of the leadership crisis that rocked the Senate at that time.
Meanwhile, the national chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on Thursday, August 18, slammed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for running the country aground and creating a major economic challenge for President Muhammadu Buhari.
While warning the PDP to henceforth stop criticising the current government, Oyegun revealed that the country was now on life support.
